Hey there, welcome to the very first episode of the Midlife Energy Club podcast. My name is Emma Queen and this podcast is your new audio home if you’re a woman navigating midlife and ready to feel powerful, purposeful and energised again. We are not here for perfection, we are here for real talk, real tools and real transformation.

In this space we’ll chat about all things nervous system balance, mindset shifts, movement, midlife and so much more. Whether you’re rebuilding, recharging or reigniting something deep inside, I’ve got you and I am so bloody happy that you are here. But before we get into podcast episodes, I wanted to share you, share with you my journey and I’m going to make mistakes because I have not recorded a podcast in a very, very long time.

It’s been a hot minute. So, a bit about me. I’m someone who’s walked the road and I’m still walking it.

I tell you, I’m still walking it. I’ve lost recently, and I say recently in the last 12 months, I’ve lost 35 kilos. And this is an interesting space to be in because many moons ago, I was a personal trainer, exercise instructor, Zumba teacher, boxing instructor, boot camp instructor, and I was super duper fit around 10 to 15 years ago.

And over the last 10 years, well, at least the last eight, the weight has piled on. As things have been a bit stressful, I’m a single mum or my daughter is now 22, but life got to me and it was always a big reach to get back to that fitness level. And so as I’ve hit perimenopause, that weight would not shift.

I was trying everything, fasting, all the food things. I even went back onto meat after many, many years of being vegan and vegetarian. So what I’ve done over the last 12 months has been a bloody effort, but losing the weight has simply changed everything.

And so still a personal trainer technically and doing a little bit of work there, but really I’m bringing my knowledge here of what I’ve been doing, trauma therapy, nervous system work, and neuroscience into what I do today. So yep, single mum. I’ve run many businesses.

I’ve burned out and I’ve rebuilt. My beautiful daughter also has a business now and I’m very proud of her. I’ve helped people rewrite their beliefs and reclaim their energy, not just physically, but mentally and emotional too.

And look, I turn 50 next year. I don’t say that with dread anymore. I say it with power because midlife is not the beginning of the end.

It’s the beginning of your rise. And that is something I’ve been working on, not only with the weight loss and building up strength and getting super duper fit again. It’s that mindset of, right, this is the next stage.

And I know I’m not the only one and I’ll get into that in just a moment. If you ask my friends, they’ll say, Emma’s been denying that she’s going into perimenopause for a few years. And they’re completely right because I did not want to face what was coming up.

Although I did make that very conscious decision 12 months ago. If I was going to go into perimenopause and menopause, I wanted to do it in the strongest way possible. I’d recently had some blood tests done and I found that I had non-alcoholic fatty liver syndrome.

And I know I have that because I haven’t drunk for over three years. It’s not something doctors really kind of believed in. They always thought maybe I was lying about drinking.

And I was never really a big drinker in the first place, but I’ve given up alcohol for many years now. And to get the results that my liver was not good, which made a lot of sense because I was super tired. I wasn’t in any pain or anything, but my liver results were definitely in the worrisome area.

Even though the doctor was saying, no, that’s perfectly normal. I did a lot of research around metabolic syndrome and I worked out that I had that myself. Now, metabolic syndrome is another topic we’ll talk about on the podcast for another day, but it includes things like diabetes.

Now I wasn’t diabetic, but I was definitely pre-diabetic. So not only did I get the results of the non-alcoholic fatty liver syndrome, but also insulin was not going very well for me. So I revolutionized my diet.

I know all about protein. I educated myself and I’ve had a fuck ton of protein since. And that’s essentially where my food sits these days.

The protein gives me a feeling of fullness and also helps me build my strength. So in conjunction with changing my diet, overhauling it, looking at the bigger picture, like I was looking at my daughter and her lovely partner and they’re talking about having kids in the future. And I was like, you know what? I want to be on the floor playing with the kids.

I want to be super duper fit grandma or whatever I get called. And I knew that I was not going to get there at the rate I was going. And I’ll say only one more thing about the fatty liver syndrome.

I thought my diet was pretty good. And in comparison to other people, yes, it was pretty good. I don’t eat fast food.

I don’t have soft drink. As I said, I don’t drink. However, my body was not liking the sneaky snacks and the sweet treats.

Right. And I found during the hormonal times, which is exacerbated by perimenopause, by the way, I would over consume on the sweet treats and give myself the great example of all, you know, you deserve it. You work hard, your hormones are calling out to you.

But what I didn’t know, and this is where we’re heading with education around perimenopause and menopause, is that my hormones were also lying to me. So we’ll get there. So I’ve been going to the gym a lot.

And I do Pilates now. I started running probably about nine months ago. So doing park runs, I can tell you more about that later.

And I now can run five kilometers, but I can run 10 kilometers. And I’m also running up and down mountains at the moment. But that’s a story for another day.

But I have to say I started walking. And this is what we’ll go through on the podcast and not only on the podcast, but in the Midlife Energy Club community, we can go into a bit more detail on how you can introduce exercise little bit by little bit. How do you eat an elephant? You start with its toenails.

And so that is my intention in not only helping you lovely ladies, but inspiring you because if I can do it and I can reverse non-alcoholic fatty liver syndrome, reverse metabolic syndrome, reverse the diabetes that was heading my way, then you can too. And I did it all kind of myself with a little bit of doctor’s help in terms of bloods and things like that. So I’m not saying we’re against doctors and I’m going to be getting some experts in.

But essentially, it was driven by me looking at that bigger picture and going, you know what, I want to be the fittest and healthiest I can be. I’m going to be living for another 20, 30, 40, 50 years. Who knows? We never know, right? But I wanted to make sure that I wanted to do that in the strongest way possible.

So enough about me for now. So I wanted to talk about why I created the Midlife Energy Club. And look, I know what it feels like to wake up and feel completely exhausted, having a night’s sleep and then still waking up tired, uninspired, like I was meant for more, but I didn’t know where to start.

And this is why I started the club. It’s more of a movement, actually, a community, a resource hub. And it’s definitely not a fitness club, although we will be talking about movement and strength in the podcast and in the community.

So it’s for women who are just done with diets and drama, ready for deep, sustainable energy. So as much as I’ve just talked about changing my diet there, this is more around getting in touch with you and your body. You know what feels good.

My diet of high protein may not suit you. And this is why we’ve got some experts coming in to talk about various ways of working out what your body needs, reducing inflammation and feeling energised because it’s the Midlife Energy Club, right? We want to feel energised. So inside the club, we’re going to look at movement, mindset, nervous system regulation, which is my favourite bit, and motivation, of course, because those things matter, especially when it comes to hormone shifting and stress and the world feeling heavy and all the things being thrown at us.

So I wanted to create a space where women could feel safe, seen and supported. And that’s essentially what the club is. And you know, let’s be honest, I’ve always wanted to have a bit of a club and people to join it because that sounds cool, right? I want to be part of the club.

So yeah, when you join the club, you can also brag that you’re in a club. So here’s what you can expect. So every month inside the club, we’re going to explore themes.

It might be a nervous system care, confidence building or simply moving your body without punishment. And I’m big on that moving your body without injury. This whole 12 months, there has been basically no injuries, a couple of niggles here and there, but no injuries that have put me out and made me scared to exercise.

I am big on creating this change little bit by little bit and creating that confidence in the physical body that it can grow stronger, more flexible, et cetera. So you get me as your guide, your trainer, your cheerleader, and also powerful community of women doing this alongside you. And this podcast will be an extension of that.

So think of it as your go-to for insights, encouragement, and little reality checks when needed. And so we’ll have chats, interviews, practical tips, and maybe the occasional soapbox moment when I get a little bit ranty. So right now, as this recording is being recorded in April 2025, founding memberships are open, which means more value, more access to me and front row seats as we build something really, really special.

So come and check us out at midlife-energy-club.com.au. Look, I’ll post it in the comments, don’t worry, or head to the show notes. And you’re going to find information on the membership, our private Facebook community, and even a bit of merch if you want to wear some of our t-shirts and hoodies. So I want to thank you for being here.
